ARTISTS BOOKS
I love books and I have made them since I was a child. These books were made while I was a student at Camberwell School of Art, a college with a longstanding tradition of books and small letterpress publishing.
Taliesin - a reworking in watercolour and collage of the bardic tale. Original is a one-off but a colour xerox version was published as a ltd. ed. of 100 copies in 1990, pub.The Sound The Universe Makes.
Mermaid Boat - a one-off 3D book whose pages open out in an expanding Fibonacci spiral from the sail of the little boat. The text is clear on thin silver film sheets, in the shape of crescent moons, and contains information about the moon, the tides and Goddesses associated with the moon and the sea.
Map Book - What kind of book would a witch have to navigate around the South Downs, between old neolithic sites and meeting places? This one! Boards are cut slate, nepalese daphne bark paper, Indian ink, oil pastel and watercolour. The compass on the front really works. Inspired by the wonderful gazeteers for the chalk horses of Wiltshire.
Animal Tarot - A series of nine small cards made with constructed paper depicting birds and animals of the British Isles. May have been used for divination in the past. The box is a later addition, historically as it has a cage of metal wire reminiscent of reliquaries.
Metaphysical Book - Who doesn't love empty cigar boxes? You can make really fat books with found objects stuck in and they still close. The poems in this book are from a book of poetry called The Crone's Book of Word by Valerie Worth. I loved them, and made this book to think about metaphysical questions.
